Location

In the heart of Ciutadella

The Hotel Menorca Patricia is located in Ciutadella de Menorca. We are only 300 metres from the city centre and 100 metres from the Port of Ciutadella, half way down the Passeig de Sant Nicolau, one of the main avenues in Ciutadella that joins the Plaça des Born Square and Sant Nicolau Castle.

This town, at the west end of Minorca, is remarkable for its stately palaces, its spectacular Cathedral, and for its picturesque port and serene backstreets.

A personal recommendation is to visit the island at Easter, April and May and also at the beginning of June and October. During these months you will be charmed by the serene atmosphere and pace of authentic Minorcan life. Other relevant advantages can be:

  • Better prices on flight fares, hotels and car rentals
  • Quieter coves and beaches (with guaranteed free car park)
  • Good weather (generally)
  • Greener landscapes

    ITS NATURAL PORT

Ciutadella has a small natural port, sheltered from the north winds. A few times a year, the port is affected by a natural phenomenon called a rissaga, when the sea level first decreases substantially, followed by the arrival of a surprisingly large wave, which exceeds the original level and floods the area of Es Pla.

This port once sheltered the cargo and passenger ships that link the island of Minorca with Majorca and Barcelona with regular lines run by the companies Iscomar and Baleària, respectively. Recently a new dock has been built just outside the mouth of the port that allows for the mooring of larger ships. This pier was built in the open sea and is hence not affected by the rissagas.

      TYPICAL STREETS

Ciutadella is also characterised by its narrow old streets, with odd names like Qui no Passa (dead-end-street) or Ses Voltes (The Arches), which starts at the Plaça Nova or Plaça d’Espanya (New Square or Spain Square) and ends at the Cathedral of Ciutadella. Then, continuing straight on towards the Town Hall, we find the Plaça des Born Square, with its imposing obelisk that commemorates the Turkish attack on the 9th of July 1558, led by the admiral of the Ottoman fleet, Piali. There is also a wonderful vantage point of the port from here.

        BEACHES

One of the main tourist attractions around Ciutadella is its abundant and beautiful beaches. On the western coast of the island, there are several residential areas built on small caves such as Cala Blanca, Santandría, etc.

On the southern coast, beyond the Artrutx lighthouse, we find Cala en Bosch and Son Xoriguer, also developed beach areas, and a little further, the longest unspoiled stretch on the southern coast, home to Cala en Turqueta, Son Saura, Es Talaier, Macarelleta and Macarella, all marvellous coves with crystal-clear waters and pine trees leaning onto the white sand beaches. The northern coast is more rugged, punished by the north winter winds. Here we will find the developed Cala Morell cove and the unspoiled beaches of La Vall, possibly the most beautiful beach on the island, and El Pilar.
